French Onion Sliders Recipe

My friend, Patty, introduced me to one of her family’s favorite meals called French Onion Sloppy Joes. It’s a super-fast dinner option.

Just think a cross between a traditional Sloppy Joe and French Onion Soup. Some folks have compared these to maid-rite sandwiches too.

These French Onion Sliders take that amazing ground beef mixture up a notch to a whole new level.

First off, we use Hawaiian Rolls as the buns. The trick is to purchase a 12 pack and leave them attached. Take a serrated knife and cut the entire pack of buns in half so that you have a large, rectangular top and bottom bun. See photo below.

French Onion Slider Recipe with Ground Beef

Layer two is the fast French Onion Beef Mixture consisting of browned ground beef, condensed French Onion Soup and some water and flour as a thickener.

Top this with a healthy layer of shredded cheese. If you love cheese, go heavy or if there’s just a little left in the bottom of the bag, use up what you have.

Put the top bun on, and then finish with the big finale.

What could make this even more delicious? Butter, yes melted butter combined with dried minced onions, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and salt. Pour that sinful sauce over the top of the sandwiches and never look back.

These sliders are great for parties, pitch-ins or just a weeknight dinner. Serving a crowd? Make a batch of these mini French Onion ground beef sandwiches and a batch of these King’s Hawaiian Roll Ham Sandwiches and everyone will be happy.

Recipe FAQs

  • It’s much easier to cut these super bowl sliders into individual sandwiches after baking than to construct each slider individually from the start.
  • To prevent the French onion sliders from sticking to the bottom of the pan after baking, spray the pan with nonstick cooking spray or line the pan with aluminum foil.
  • My family prefers shredded Mozzarella cheese but Swiss or Gruyere would be amazing. You could also use slices of cheese, we’ve used Provolone slices before.
  • Be sure to cover the sandwiches tightly with foil before baking to prevent the tops from burning.
  • If you use salted butter for the sauce, you may need to omit the salt in the sauce.

  • Use ground turkey instead of ground beef.
  • Switch up the types of cheeses; Swiss, mozzarella, gruyere or provolone cheese are all great.
  • Try using deli roast beef instead of hamburger.
