What are the rules for verbs like Gustar? ›

The most common structure of verbs like gustar uses the verb in its third person form, whether singular or plural. Singular: me gusta la bebida (I like the [one] drink.) Plural: me gustan las bebidas (I like the drinks.)

Typically we use just the two conjugations of gustar (gusta and gustan). The exception is when the object liked is a person.

In order to say "to like (something)" in Spanish, we use the verb gustar. The word order is unusual, however: pronoun (me, te, le, etc.) + gusta/gustan + noun/infinitive verb.

Gustar. The verb gustar literally means to be pleasing to but is understood in English as to like. An indirect object pronoun (me, te, le, nos, os, les) always accompanies gustar. Me gusta el arte.

In Spanish, verbs are divided into three categories for all tenses: -ar verbs, -er verbs, and -ir verbs.

The big difference is that the verb gustar changes not based upon who is doing the liking, but rather what it is that's being liked, in this case books. Because “books” is plural, gustar takes on the third person plural.

The verb “gustar” is another -ar ending verb, but it conjugates differently than regular verbs in that it doesn't use the conjugation pattern “-o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an” in the expected manner. This is because the verb “gustar” literally means “to be pleasing” to someone.

Gustar in the Indicative Present Perfect

For example, "me ha gustado / han gustado", meaning "I have liked".

Normally to turn a sentence into a question we move the subject from the beginning of the sentence to the end. With gustar the subject is already at the end of the sentence, so all we need to do is add the question marks: statement: Te gustan las anchoas.

We always use the singular form of verb gustar when followed by actions! For example, this is incorrect: Me gustan bailar y cantar. If you want to ask someone whether s/he likes doing something, just remember to add the question marks and change the intonation.

Verb forms of 'gustar' Although gustar conjugates like a regular -ar verb (e.g. gusto, gustas, gusta…), most of the time in the present tense you will use two verb forms: él/ella/usted form: gusta (third person singular); and ellos/ellas/ustedes form: gustan (third person plural).

How many sets of regular preterite endings are there? The good news is there are only two sets of endings for regular preterite verbs: one for –ar verbs and another one for –er and –ir verbs. Less conjugations to memorise – that's a win!

Second conjugation verbs

These end in '-ere'. The key letter in these endings is 'e'.

While irregular verbs are often a focus of grammatical errors, regular verbs are a frequent source of spelling errors. Most regular verbs form their past tense by adding -ed to the base: accept/accepted. A few verbs form the past tense with a -t ending: build/built.
